Allspice comes from a tropical evergreen tree. It’s native to Central America and the West Indies, but is used around the world in just about every culture’s cuisine. Allspice can be added to sweet or savory food, or even brewed as a tea.

Health Benefits

The mineral, vitamins, and antioxidants found in allspice may have several health benefits. Many of the compounds in allspice are being studied as potential treatments for inflammation, nausea, and upset stomach. It is also believed that the compounds found in allspice may  help decrease the negative symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes. Allspice is an excellent source of manganese, calcium, iron, vitamin B5, Copper…

Cloves

Cloves

Originating in Indonesia, cloves are dried flower buds from the clove tree. They are a popular spice that people use in soups, stews, meats, sauces, and rice dishes. Their name comes from the Latin word clavus, which means nail since the shape of a dried clove resembles that of a nail.

Health benefits

In Haiti, cloves are used not only as a flavor for foods and beverages but also as an herb due to their medical properties. They can be taken in three ways: Whole, grounded, and in the form of oil. Cloves are used to treat intestinal gas, toothache (mashed and directly to the gums or tooth), to hide bad breath to help treat diarrhea, nausea,  and vomiting. At home, cloves infused in tea can help get rid of flu, sore throat, and headache. Cloves provide aromatic and intense flavor qualities to hot beverages and sometimes alleviate the fleshy smell of meats like fish and pork.

Cloves are a great source of Vitamins, Magnesium, and are antioxidants.

Turmeric

Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice that comes from the root of the curcuma longa plant, which is a perennial in the ginger family. Its major active ingredient is curcumin that gives turmeric its yellowish color. Turmeric is one of the main ingredients in a curry sauce — it’s potent, pungent, bitter and very earthy. You can buy the spice ground, or you can buy the fresh root. Turmeric can also be added to your smoothies, golden milk, soups, scrambled eggs, rice, roasted veggies.

Health Benefits

Curcumin has antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric is believed to help in lessening inflammation, pain, improves memory, and lower risks of heart disease. In some parts of Haiti, turmeric is called Safran and is used to prepare tea, to season meat along with other fresh spices, and it’s also used as a food colorant.

Turmeric is used in our Bouillon, Fish stew, and All Purpose seasoning.

Cumin

Cumin

Cumin is an herb grown in the Middle East, Mediterranean, India, and China. Today, most cumin sold in the United States originally comes from India. People across the world use cumin as a seasoning in food. Its oil is also used in perfumes.

Health Benefits

For generations, people have used cumin to treat digestive issues ranging from belly pain, bloating, and diarrhea. In some countries like India, cumin is used to treat kidney and bladder stones, eye disease, and even leprosy. Cumin is also a good source of: Vitamin A, Calcium, Iron.

Tarragon

Tarragon

Tarragon is a perennial herb that comes from the sunflower family. It’s widely used for flavoring, fragrance and medicinal purposes. It has a subtle taste and pairs well with dishes like chicken, veal, and lamb, as well as seafood and egg dishes. Tarragon pairs particularly well with acidic flavors like lemon and vinegar.

Health Benefits

Tarragon is believed to have the potential to reduce inflammation and pain, improve sleep, appetite, relieve toothache, boosting the health of the female reproductive system.

Tarragon is used in our Fish stew/Seafood seasoning.
